Clark Kent can outpoint Sugar Shane Mosley but Super Manny Pacquiao requires KO

Come May 7 when Shane Donte Mosley answers the bell against peak of performance Manny Pacquiao, it really won't be satisfactory for the Pinoy Idol to just breeze his way to a unanimous, 12 round decision over the much older fighter.

It really won't be enough for Pacman to win on points even if it is a numbers romp.

Such is the predicament, such are the demands placed on those few upon whom super hero status is bestowed. Not to say that Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao has not earned his super hero status for surely he's more than worthy of his widspread adulation.

But Manny is due, maybe I should say overdue, for a statement fight, the kind of special victory that keeps separating him from all others including the laying in the cut Floyd Mayweather Jr.

For Manny to go beyond the ho-hum, to surpass what Mayweather did last May 1, he will have to something that has never happened to the redoubtable but graying by the minute Mosley before in this, his 55th professional bout.

There, I've said it.

To keep his perch on boxing's Mt. Olympus, to ward off the other claimants to the mythical but so much fun Pound For Pound crown, Pacquiao has to knock out or stop Mosley.

(This Sergio Martinez character is eyeing Manny's perch like a hot to trot burglar, have you noticed? He's as eager as Mayweather is dormant. Unfortunately, Martinez has no real viable targets to make his own statement(s) against through no fault of his own.)

Vernon Forrest outpointed SSM twice. Ditto for slick southpaw and bigger man Ronald "Winky" Wright. Two thirds of Shane's six pro losses came at their more than capable, more than fast hands.

Mr. Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, still a potent force, also decisioned the Pomona Kid who is no longer a kid.

By starching or stopping the rusting Mosley, Pacquiao adds a flourish like the great artists do.

He needs to make a statement like he did back to back to back, retiring cocksure De La Hoya on his stool, flattening overconfident Ricky Hatton in less than six minutes and cooking with hot grease at the finish to TKO Boricua Banger Cotto in their 12th and final stanza.

Pacquiao UD 12 Mosley does nothing for history, not really.

If you're a Picasso of pugilism, a Rembrandt of the ring, and you're in your primetime like we all think Pacquiao is, then in your 58th pro bout, you don't leave the conclusion in the hands of three strangers with scorecards.

You take control, you take command, you make a statement.

Putting a KO or a TKO on the result won't frighten Mayweather away. Sometime next year, when all his silly court cases are concluded, he will come looking for the $40 or $50 million paynight of a lifetime.

There's little drama to Mosley-Pacquiao, especially if you saw a dithering Mosley in with Sergio Mora and/or saw how Mayweather hurt him brielfy in their round two.

Winning 11 or 12 of the rounds, in effect whitewashing Mosley, is not enough.

The statement would be battering Mosley in a way that neither Mayweather nor any other foe ever has.

Any other outcome is, I said trying to stifle a yawn, is just another day at the office, another Joshua Clottey or Antonio Margarito thumping.

I remind you of the Robert Kennedy line about to those whom much is given, much is expected.

That's Pacquiao on the night of May 7.

A KO or TKO of Mosley puts an exclamation point on this outing.

A mere points victory, well that is just not super hero stuff.

A decision victory is OK for the Clark Kents of the world but not enough for Super Manny.
