Pacquiao lighter, but still packs a wallop
As he was jumping rope Friday afternoon, Manny Pacquiao was a bit concerned that his current weight is a bit low.
But the Filipino star quickly assured a handful of those listening that while he may be a bit underweight, his punches can still knock just anyone senseless, including Shane Mosley when they face off on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“Payat nga ako pero mataba naman ang suntok ko,” said Pacquiao, who will not only be defending his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown but the mythical title of pound-for-pound crown as well.
Pacquiao, who started out as a light-flyweight (108 lbs) in the mid-1990s, said he could still make lightweight (135 lbs) since he is not cutting down on his eating habits.
“I can make lightweight if I want to,” said Pacquiao.
Still, Pacquiao’s ferocious showing was enough to give a smile on trainer Freddie Roach’s face all-afternoon long as the 32-year-old lefty pushed himself to the limit during training at the Wild Card Boxing Club.
“My concern now is how to slow him down (in training),” said Roach.
Pacquiao explained why he is asking Roach for an extra round, an extra minute, during the mitts session and in almost anything that he does.
“I am just trying to make sure that I will be in great shape when the fight comes,” Pacquiao told Manila-based scribes while he was dressing up for a gig at Staples Center later in the day.
“I am also pumped up for training,” said Pacquiao, who expects Mosley to be in excellent condition when they answer the bell before a sellout crowd at the 17,000-seat venue.
Roach said that while Pacquiao “is on fire the last two days of training and knows the gameplan,” he has “to slow him down, have him do fewer rounds so he could save it for the fight.”
Pacquiao is a heavy favorite to repulse Mosley’s challenge but Roach wants his fighter to do it in stunning fashion by becoming the first puncher to deal Mosley a knockout defeat.
