Mosley will play dirty -- Roach
Desperate time calls for desperate measure.
And Freddie Roach exactly knows such approach is the only way for challenger Sugar Shane Mosley to stand a chance against welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao once they finally stand toe-to-toe in the ring 10 days from now.
As he worked the mitts for 12 rounds with the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter in the world Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time), Roach repeatedly reminded Pacquiao to be wary of Mosley’s dirty tactics.
“Bang! Bang! Bang! He’ll get dirty, he’ll get rough, but it won’t matter,” hollered Roach before a sparse crowd watching him and Pacquiao do their thing at the Wild Card gym here.
“He’ll get dirty. That’s the only way he can win this fight.”
Mosley, 39, remains a 6-2 underdog against Pacquiao in their May 7 fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where the World Boxing Organization (WBO) 147-pound belt of the fighting congressman from the Philippines will be at stake.
Down to the final five days before training camp tapers down, both Roach and Pacquiao already know their fight plan like the palm of their hands, repeatedly going through the routine non-stop for more than half an hour.
So intense the workout was that not a few times, the 32-year-old Pacquiao staggered Roach, the four-time Trainer of the Year, with solid blows to the body.
But the 51-year-old trainer hardly minded it.
“You’re hurting me. Drive it hard,” Roach howled as he taunted Pacquiao to throw more punches at him.
At one time, Roach even had to use an improvised headband where a video camera -- provided by Showtime -- was placed in order to record up close the excessive workout.
Pacquiao later admitted that even against a 39-year-old opponent whose obviously, already way past his prime, he’s not about to take any chances.
“No way,” Pacquiao told Manila-based sportswriters as he was winding down with his two-hour training. “Kaya nga maaga tayo umakyat (sa Baguio) at nag-ensayo.”
The way training went through yesterday, Roach has no doubt that the eight-time world champion is now ready to take on Mosley head-on.
“We’re 100 percent ready for the fight. If Mosley brings his best, we’re ready for his best,” said Roach, who joined Pacquiao and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in a media call earlier in the day.
“I don’t think there is any room for an upset, but in boxing you never know. We’re 100 percent ready on our end. We’ve done everything we can to get ready for the fight,” said Roach.
Meanwhile, Kenny Bayless has been named as the third man in the ring for the Pacquiao-Mosley slugfest even as Duane Ford, Dave Moretti and Glenn Trowbridge were appointed as the three judges who will score the bout.
This will be the ninth time Bayless will be calling the shot for a Pacquiao fight, the last of which came in 2009 during the WBO championship match between the Filipino and Miguel Cotto.
In other developments, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum refused to dwell on the offer reportedly made by his promotional outfit to Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez for a possible third fight with boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao this October.
The 79-year old veteran boxing executive stressed it is imperative to concentrate at the moment on the Filipino’s title defense of his welterweight belt two weeks from now.
In a media conference involving him, Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach, Arum said at the moment, his attention is solely pre-occupied by the coming fight pitting two of the best 147-pound fighters in the world today.
“Freddie and Manny are preparing for May 7 and we’re not looking past that,” said Arum.
Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Golden Boy Promotions, the rival outfit of Top Rank, was the first to disclose the offer first reported by ESPN veteran boxing columnist Dan Rafael.
