Mosley out to shock world
MANILA, Philippines – Looking forward to a bruising battle on May 7 in Las Vegas, Shane Mosley has a message to Manny Pacquiao.
“Be ready,” Mosley told the Bulletin on Wednesday (Tuesday in the US) from his snow-capped mountain training camp in Big Bear, California.
In an interview facilitated by Suzanne Summerville, Mosley’s Filipino-American publicist, the highly-accomplished Mosley said he is raring to get in the ring with the pound-for-pound king “and shock the world again” just like when he beat a prime Oscar De La Hoya two times.
Mosley has been in Big Bear, a resort city 100 miles from Los Angeles that is 7,800 feet above sea level since early March and working his butt off morning and night.
While Mosley admits that there’s been nothing special about his training regimen, he is going the extra mile in preparing for what could be the defining moment of his storied 18-year career.
“I pretty much do the same things (in training) but I am working doubly hard,” said the 39-year-old Mosley, stressing that even his diet remains the same, “taking on chicken, beef, salmon and some fruits.”
Up against a fighter whose style has perplexed even the most skillful ring artists, Mosley would not concede that Pacquiao will be the most difficult fighter he will have ever to deal with but readily gave in to the belief that he “expects a hard and strenuous fight” when they square off at the MGM Grand.
Age, Mosley’s age, that is, won’t be a factor even if the fighter admits he will be four months shy off his 40th by the time he trades power shots with the Filipino fireball.
“Yeah, I will be almost 40. But it won’t be a factor. I still feel great and still have a lot (of fight) left in me.”
Mosley is so upbeat about his chances against the heavily-favored Pacquiao that retirement is not even in his mind yet.
“I am giving myself three to four more years,” said Mosley.
Before hanging up, his caller thanked Mosley for giving a Manila-based paper the opportunity to speak to him and after the interviewer wished him luck and kidded him to train hard, Mosley assured him his training is not skipping a beat.
“I will,” he said when told to be ready as well.
